Tyler Perry won’t rule out more “Madea” movies.
The 52-year-old star retired her character Mabel ‘Madea’ Earlene Simmons after ‘A Madea Family Funeral’ in 2019, but after bringing her back for the upcoming 12th film, ‘A Madea Homecoming’, he has now learned to no longer making big announcements about his comedic alter ego.
He told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “Look, I thought it was over this last time. So, I decided not to say anything. Just let it be.”
Tyler thinks it’s “incredible” that the character is still so popular after so long.
He said: “It’s really amazing in 20 years to see this character still rocking. It means that people look longingly at this grandmother.
“I’m really excited about it so people can see it and laugh. Man, we need to laugh.
In the film – which follows Madea as she tries to throw a party for her great-grandson only for family secrets to threaten to disrupt the event – Tyler also plays rude Joe and was behind the camera as as a director, but he insisted on juggling so many different things just seemed “normal”.
He said: “I have many different facets in my brain. I know every one of them is probably aimed at people watching the movie, but in real life it just seems normal.
But his co-stars found it “intense” to see Tyler in action and were impressed with how easily he rendered it.
Brandon Black, who plays Tim, said: “He flows seamlessly between Uncle Joe, Madea and Tyler Perry.
“He’s in full drag and a booming male voice is directing and telling people to move the camera this way and that way and then into a female voice and then back to a normal voice and then he’s from return to Madea.
“As an actor, you just take a little bit, like pause, while he’s directing because he’s going to come right back at you in the same shot,” Black noted. “He’s not going to call it cut. It’s intense, but it’s really inspiring to see someone so good at all of their jobs.
The producer previously insisted it was time to “say goodbye” to the popular character after almost 20 years as he felt “tired”.
Speaking in October 2018, he laughed and said: “Time for me to kill that old b****, I’m tired man! I’m tired.
“I just don’t want to look her age playing her. So, we’re going to say goodbye to her.”
