Daniel Kaluuya had given up acting before Jordan Peele approached him about the lead role in the hit movie Get Out.

During an interview with his Get Out and Nope director for Essence magazine, the British actor revealed that he “gave up” acting before he got the call about the 2017 horror because he felt so “disillusioned” with the industry.

“I never told you this, but when you contacted me and we had this Skype, I was really disappointed to play. I had stopped playing for about a year and a half,” he said. he declared to Peele. “I checked, because I was just like, it’s not working. I wasn’t getting roles, because racism and all that stuff — so you reach out, it was like, d “Okay, I’m not crazy. It’s okay. Everything will be fine.”

Kaluuya, 33, added that he “got” Peele’s script when he came out and instantly knew “it’s a hit, it’s a banger”.

After his Oscar-nominated turn in Get Out, Kaluuya appeared in films such as Widows, Black Panther, Queen & Slim and Judas and the Black Messiah, for which he won an Academy Award.

He explained that the success of Get Out meant he was able to choose roles that excited and stretched him as an actor.

“I was just like, if that’s not a ‘F**k yeah,’ that’s a no. This kind of house cleaned,” he shared. “I want to go places that I don’t know I can. I want three-dimensional characters. I want to tell the story, big or small. In Widows, I’m not so much into the movie. but my character had an arc – it had a story and an evolution. As long as it’s there, then I can commit to it.”

Kaluuya and Peele’s latest collab, Nope, begins hitting theaters July 20.
