How the Disposable Camera Became the It-Girl Accessory of 2022

With social media allowing us to document every aspect of our lives, it’s no surprise that our addiction to photography has become omnivorous. Whether it’s taking a brunch photo or marking a milestone in your life, someone is always behind the lens to capture every moment.

And, while virtually every man and dog owns an iPhone, known for its insane photographic capabilities, we are now stepping back in time to a simple era – the 90s.

You know those photos your parents would take on a family vacation that are probably tucked away in a drawer somewhere and sometimes pulled out when everyone is feeling nostalgic? These are stills from movies, and they’re having a major resurgence right now.

It might be the angelic way flash makes us look or feel the thrill of dropping it off at the dev counter, but there’s something about film cameras that feels so magical. Everything in his roll is a complete surprise, and we don’t find ourselves obsessing over every single detail, forcing our friends to take and retake the same photo a million times. There’s something wonderful about its simplicity – just take the shot and move on. It’s a physical break in time, capturing a once-in-a-lifetime moment, just once.

Cute, right?

You’ve probably seen these types of photos explode on Instagram and TikTok, so much so that there are a million different apps you can download to your phone that would achieve the same effect. But why use your phone when there’s so much fun in going the traditional film camera route? A limited amount of photos and a trip to the camera store to have them developed is all that’s needed, and when the link arrives in your email, it’s like Christmas morning.

From Kendall Jenner to Gigi Hadid to Emma Chamberlain, there’s no shortage of celebrities embracing the trend, but it’s actually the younger generation that’s driving its comeback. It’s funny that Gen Z are the biggest fans of the camera, given that they grew up at a time when the era of the iPhone was already well underway, but it’s a sweet reminder that everything what is old becomes new again at some point.

For anyone who thinks the film camera doesn’t hold a precious place in the age of iPhones, think again. For a generation that was founded on the concept of instant gratification, it’s a good reminder to slow down and just enjoy the moment.

Below, our favorite films and disposable cameras to capture your most precious memories.
