Issa Rae struggles to find work/life balance – Film News |

Issa Rae has to build downtime into her schedule or she’ll never stop working.

The actress burned out in 2021 when she had to finish the final season of Insecure, produce the first season of Rap Sh! t, film an episode of the AppleTV + anthology series Roar, run his media company HOORAE and marry Louis Diamé.

In an interview with digital magazine TODAY, Issa revealed that the experience made her actively take time to rest in her schedule.

“The last year has taught me that balance has to be pre-planned for me because otherwise I’ll be working, working, working, working,” she said. “Even after Insecure, like a model, I did an episode of Roar. Then I flew to France (for the wedding), and I was like, ‘Why do I need to do this? I could have taken those two weeks in between to relax and get ready and do all those things?” But I chose to do this episode. It was a great experience…but I know myself. I know how frustrated and/or tired I can be in some cases, and I don’t do my best when I’m like that.”

Issa makes sure her team is aware of her free time so they aren’t tempted to fill their schedule with projects.

“Because people are going to try you,” she explained. “They’ll be like, ‘Oh, it’s coming, are you sure? There’s so much money here, are you sure?'”

The 37-year-old finally took some time for herself in January after the Insecure finale aired. She went on a trip and “finally had a chance to relax and reflect”, but admitted that not working for the whole month was difficult for her.
