Janelle Monáe says “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is her own “unique, fun, weird thing”.
The 36-year-old stars as tech entrepreneur Cassandra ‘Andi’ Brand in Rian Johnson’s upcoming sequel to the 2019 thriller, and she has hailed the director for creating something different in the realm of murder mysteries.
She told the latest issue of Empire magazine: “We don’t have a lot of murder mystery movies that break new ground in this space.
“So that in itself makes it its own unique, fun, weird thing.”
His costar, Kate Hudson (Birdie Jay), agrees.
She said, “Rian does an amazing job of executing it, taking it out of where the first one was and making the audience feel like they’re in a completely different world.”
Daniel Craig returns as lead detective Benoit Blanc.
He said of the new film: “There’s definitely more white people, but it’s not very interesting to me, the idea of building Benoit’s life.
“As with Poirot and Miss Marple, what’s fun is how elements of Benoit’s character come to light through his act of solving each of these mysteries.”
Having starred as James Bond in five films, Daniel admits he’s not afraid to turn ‘Knives Out’ into a hit series.
He explained, “I’ve spent the last 15 years of my life trying to do this in a franchise, so I’m not afraid of it.
“If you have the right people in the room and the right talent then you can do it. Rian is a genius writer and doesn’t want to repeat himself. We don’t want to let people down either, we want the audience. enjoy the world we created in the first one and believe in this one.”
