Nathalie Emmanuel has always been “impatient” to play in a horror film.
The 33-year-old actress stars in ‘The Invitation’ – a new gothic horror film – and Nathalie admits it’s something she’s wanted to do for years.
She shared, “I’ve always been very interested in trying my hand at all kinds of genres. It was something I had never done before and I was so keen to try.”
The film was shot in Budapest and Nathalie admits to having found the experience exhausting.
She told Harper’s Bazaar magazine: “I mean, practically, playing pure terror and trauma is very, very tiring. It’s a useful feeling though, because even if you feel like there’s only nothing more, you have to keep moving forward. And that’s true when you’re a character trying to survive a horror!”
“The Invitation” centers around issues of power structures and oppression, and Nathalie also relished the experience of working with director Jessica M Thompson.
The actress felt like she could relate to the film and its themes as well.
Nathalie – who previously starred in ‘Game of Thrones’ – shared: “I was fascinated by how the script looked at race, power and class and how all of those things intersect.
“These people are at the top of that power structure, being very wealthy, being white, being predominantly male. Evie, being a biracial working-class woman, is immediately put in a position where she is uncomfortable.
“For me, as a woman of color, who also doesn’t come from wealth, I immediately connected to that and used the way I navigate spaces that weren’t necessarily created or designed for me to step into the role.”
